    • Event: Dallas Area Historical Society meeting
    • Guest Speaker: Claude Graves. Claude is a well-know rosarian, not only in the DFW area, but in the US and international world of roses. Claude is currently the curator of the Rose Mary Hagar Rose Garden at the Dallas Arboretuem. He belongs to several area rose societies and his talks and photos on his rose travels are always welcome.
    • Topic: Claude's program will cover some of Italy's famous international rose collectors including the Gardens of Helga Brichet, former President of the World Federation of Rose Socieities, Professor Luciano Arcangeli's garde of rare roses collected in Asia and Andrea Elimiani's garden that has the world's largest collection of Rose varieties produced by David Austin (with more than the David Austin gardens actually have)

      • Mark Walton is owner of Garrison’s Greenwood Gardens, a locally owned and operated independent retail and garden center serving the Greenwood and Shreveport are since 1959.
      • 9:40 – 10:00 a.m. Refreshment Break, Coffee & Cookies
      • 10:00 – 10:40 a.m. Dr. Allen Owings, LSU AgCenter — Common Products from the Garden Center Shelf
      • Dr. Allen Owings is a statewide leader for LSU AgCenter extension programs providing service to green industry professionals and serves as the Gulf District Director for the American Rose Society.
      • 10:45 – 12:00 Stephen Scanniello — Pruning Heritage Roses — outside learning demonstration
    • Stephen Scanniello is an author, recipient of many horticulture awards and an expert on growing heritage roses. He is best known as a hands-on gardener who transformed the Cranford Rose Garden of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden into one of the world’s most acclaimed rose gardens. His specialty is old garden roses. Bring your sharpened clippers for a hands-on pruning lesson in the Heritage Rose Garden. This educational/lab experience will improve not only pruning skills, but also rose care throughout 2016.

    Speaker: Pam Smith will present a talk on her visit to Lotusland, considered one of the "Top 10" gardens in the world.

    Location: The Farmers Branch Recreation Center. 14030 Heartside Place, Farmers Branch, TX

     

    The public is invited to attend.

     

    Several plants from the specialty nursery, Bustani Plant Farm, will be given as door prizes.

     

     

    April 28: Wine and Roses Dinner

    Bloom Dango 2017 will kick off with a preview “Wine and Roses” social and dinner for local rosarians. Our speaker Dr. Allen Owings, Gulf District Director, is bringing a contingent of 15 Louisiana rose society members to Bloom Dango. Our Louisiana friends will be having dinner with the Collin County Rose Society at Chambersville on Friday evening April 28th.

    We are inviting all South Central District rosarians to join us for an evening of inter-district Rose Society comradery.

    Enjoy all you can eat lasagna, pasta, salad, bread, and desert with ice tea, beer or wine for only $15.00 per person. Come early, the gardens will be open for you to stroll and enjoy in the cool of the evening.

    Dinner will be served in the tent at 7:00 PM.

    Reservations are required.

    Email Marian Hirsch at: marianhirsch@live.com , with subject line “Wine and Roses” and tell us the names of those coming, you can pay at the door. Deadline for reservations is noon Monday April 24.

    PS - Request the “Back Road Map” if you want to come up from Dallas and avoid Central Expressway!
